  • What most don't know: I just recently watched the Thiem documentary, and Thiem was sick in that match. He played with fever. And it wasn't sure if he could play at all. Just a few hours before the match the tournament doctor gave him the okay that he could play without endangering his health. She wanted to give him meds to ease the symptoms, but he refused because he was afraid the meds could affect his performance. Well, right decision I'd say

    Fallen DevonishFallen DevonishIl y a 12 jours
    • @Hating Maniac That's nice for you, but that's not how the phrase came about, there was always 3 of the big four in the semis to the finals in every grand slam who you had to get past to win, and at the end of the year they were always the top 4 ranked players barring one of them having an injury. To this day only these 4 players has ended the year as number 1 since 2003 no one else has broken through, that's why it was the big 4 when ever a grand slam started people would say who is going to get past the big 4, who's going to end the year as number one, and Murray was always part of that constantly.

      Fallen DevonishFallen DevonishIl y a 11 jours
    • Imo it has always been "The Big 3". I wont consider him in this group even though he was better than the rest but still not good enough to be part of this elite group.

  • keep in mind that in 2 of those epic matches, Federer had to be either injured (2005 vs Nalbandian) or sick (2008 vs Murray) that was what it took to take down arguably one of the greatest indoor player of all time before the 2010s... he has to be far off his best, you have to be near your best, and even then it was an epic battle

  • I like how when you look at the year 2008 when Federer wins once again at Shanghai few if any could of predicted one year later would be the start of the demise of a guy who by then by many was considered untouchable with the raquet in his hand. The man responsible was the Serbinator, Djokovic. Before that it became almost impossible to play at a level as good as Federer, bettering it was unthinkable. But the fact that Nadal and Djokovic would eclipse that level from 2009 onwards is quiet remarkable. After that it was like setting the difficulty on a computer game to the hardest level and then trying in vain to beat it.

    omar raziomar raziIl y a 13 jours
    • Hm hard to evaluate that objectively, but imo Thiem - Djokovic was better. Insane intensity, variety and speed throughout the whole match. Plus Thiem is a beast on court (with one of the best backhands ever) and Djokovic is a current legend, and showing his inhuman flexibility was also a nice gimmick that you won't see from anyone else..

      Peter CauterPeter CauterIl y a 8 jours
    • @omar razi I wouldn't say "the stakes are also equally important". We had some lower quality finals, like Murray-Djokovic in 2016, also Federer-Djokovic final in 2015 was not at the same level as Djokovic-Thiem RR last year. By the way, last Saturday Novak didn't look at all like he was fighting for 1 of the most important titles of his life, so calm and relaxed like never b4 this year. He knew he wasn't at his best so treated this match as the best training against Thiem he could ever have, having fun and even smiling when facing match point on Thiem's serve in the 2nd set tie-break. Still playing his "best at the moment". That's why this match was so entertaining to watch. Novak knew that whether he wins it for the 6th time or Rafa, Daniil, Thiem for the 1st time - it doesn't change in the history of tennis really nothing. In general opinion really only number of slam counts, so if Rafa wins his 21st in June next year - he'll be considered the best ever in that moment. Even if he never wins ATP Finals. And about importance of matches, emotions and dramaturgy: to me still the most important is quality of tennis. That's why, as a Novak's fan, I'd never consider last year Wimbledon's final as 1 of the top 10 slam finals ever. Some 4-setters were much better, higher quality of tennis, like Novak-Roger USO 2015, Wimbledon 2015, RG 2011, Novak-Rafa USO 2010 and 2011, the last 1 is the best slam final ever to me. The best match ever on hard courts to me was 4th round Novak-Stan at 2013 AO, only 4th round but really that was a match for the title (well, if Stan beaten Novak then, Murray still would have had chances in the final, he played great, too) - which shows that sometimes real matches for the title are in previous rounds, like also Novak-Stan quarters in Australia in 2014. The same could be with RR match Novak-Thiem last year, if Novak won he'd play in semis and maybe won the title. Especially in ATP Finals each match has huge importance when you play all matches against top players.

      Marek WichniarekMarek WichniarekIl y a 10 jours
    • @Marek Wichniarek there are couple of things which make any match great, first of course is the quality of tennis but the stakes are also equally important. I feel that this match being the semi final had higher stakes as opposed to a RR match, it is for the same reason that i considered Fed-Nalbandian and Sampras-Becker match to be ranked higher

      omar raziomar raziIl y a 10 jours
    • @omar razi I think last year Thiem-Djoker was better, still maybe not the best ever. And this year Novak played really well and stayed calm and focused but he was not able to attack Theim's forehand at all. Bh dtl and fh inside-in didn't exist, that change direction would have caused much more damage, especially when Thiem was stuck to his bh corner all the time slicing the ball. Only that beautiful fh inside-in saving match-point in the 2nd set tie-break - then the whole 3rd set (and the whole match, really) Novak didn't attack Dom's fh side. That's why he didn't break him for the whole match. And against this 80% of best Novak Thiem played the whole match like he was fighting for his life and still was quite close to losing. So I don't know if this was Thiem's best level, too. High quality match, though. And 2-setters can be great, too, like Djoker-Roger final 2012, and Nadal-Thiem RR this year.

  • Let me get this straight - 5 of your top 10 ATP finals matches since 1990 involved Roger Federer? Look, I love Roger, but let's get real here. You have a few hundred matches to choose from and can't come up with more than 3 matches that involved players other than Roger, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray? How about truth in advertising - these were the best 10 matches Tennis TV has the rights to. I'm old enough to remember some great finals matches between Becker & Edberg, Becker & Lendl, Agassi & Edberg, Sampras & Courier, Courier & Krajicek, Ivanisevic & Edberg, Muster & Enqvist. Heck, in 1990 there were 2 great matches between Edberg & Agassi - one in the RR and the 2nd in the finals. But you only managed to find 5 with Roger in them - and not even include his best match, ie, the 2006 final against James Blake? Lame. That's all I gotta say - the list is lame. 30 years of matches and it all boils down to The GOAT playing in 5 of the top 10. For Roger that's a huge compliment. For all the other players who made the finals for the last 30 years - that's a huge bitch slap. Then again. I'm all in on Roger being the GOAT, so here's another nod to Roger's greatness.

    • It probably would've been higher if not for the fact that Roger was coming back from an injury and hadn't played in 6 weeks before the ATP Finals. He had an ankle injury and basically if not for the fact that he never retires from matches he probably should have retired in the 4th set of the Nalbandian match. I also found it interesting that they chose the 2008 Murray match - because Roger had a back injury in that match and actually took an injury time out in the 3rd set. Prior to the last few years it was one of the few times he'd ever taken an injury time-out during a match in his entire career. So basically it's ironic that what Tennis TV considered 2 of the top 10 matches are matches Roger played injured. Well...3 if you count the 2014 Wawrinka match where he injured his back in the final set...and Stan got pissed because Mirka called him a "cry baby" from the stands. LOL.

    • @Robert Barkovicz the only possibility to beat someone twice in a tournament is if that someone arrives in the final of the Finals (sorry for the repetition) after losing one match in the Round Robin, and loses again in the final. Rafa arrived twice in the final of this tournament, but always lost against a player (Roger in '10, Nole in '13) whom he did not have to face in the Round Robin. So no, nobody ever did that. Thiem would be the first, in case

    • @SJ Well said, he is my GOAT too and the most likely to eventually hold the all-time record of Major wins but alas, in the hearts of the people, it will always be Federer.

    • @GTS All that math count is all good and well but you're forgetting criteria number 1: the public's heart. Federer is the undisputed number one there, ahead of........I don't know. This is from a Nadal fan.

    • @Obi-Wan Kenobi Agassi is really classy by lying to the ATP about his meth usage and ruining an exhibition match making fun of the way Sampras tipped. I guess it’s also okay to judge greatest (tennis player) of all time using this criteria and not from the wins and titles but idk
