  • Something about this camera angle, or maybe it's in a higher FPS than usual broadcast. It seems like it's a lot closer to showing the real speed of the pros play. It normally looks slowed down on T.V. and then just another level in person. But this is looking quite fast.

      Anogoya DagaatiAnogoya DagaatiIl y a 19 jours
    • @Anogoya Dagaati , True! It is definitely smarter to lob it. I wonder if the pros would set up some type of training, so they can hit those lobs much more precise, and make it a great defense weapon. After all, they practice serving drills...

Steve Just SayingSteve Just SayingIl y a 20 jours
    • @Steve Just Saying Its incredibly tough to master - leave it short and you give the opponent a smash opportunity - overcook it and well you lose the point! Cooked to perfection though? • Shapovalov has such little margin for error in his game, and no real plan B when things aren't working. He tries to hit winners off nearly everything and too often they go flying out. He's a great stroke maker, but not a great match player. To take the next step up, he needs to improve his tennis brain and start thinking his way through matches rather than trying to fly through them.

    T HT HIl y a 20 jours
    • @Oleg A. I think it's perhaps more than that. There have always been incredibly talented players out there who never fulfil their potential because they don't quite have the temperament to think their way through matches. It's instinctive talent they have, and when they have off days they can have very bad losses. I'm sure we can all think of really flashy shotmakers in the past who never fulfilled their potential because of it. Shapovalov would do well to listen to what Martina Navratilova said about it: "Most people believe that tennis is all about great shots but a lot of points have been thrown away when a player has hit a great shot and then failed to do the right thing afterwards. If you don't take advantage, then suddenly the other player is back in the point and you have to find another great shot. How many of those can you hit in the course of a point? Even if you manage that, you won't keep it up for three or five sets. Matches are not won by great points, they are won by winning the points that you should win. It's about narrowing down the odds and saving yourself from having to make too many great shots. You can't hit 10 great shots in a rally but you can play good, solid, excellent tennis."

      T HT HIl y a 20 jours
    • The maximalism of youth, perhaps? Give the guy a bit of time, Rublev needed that too and has come out strong this year.

    Marcio TavaresMarcio TavaresIl y a 20 jours
    • @Tyler Byrne I understand, but my question now is: he's exhausted of what? I don't think he played more than the other players, did he? We've had a 6 months break. I think his fitness is not an issue, unless he did nothing during the break. Maybe he is shaken psychologically about everything this year. Maybe it has something to do with his new ranking, getting closer to the top 10, the pressure. Maybe it's something personal or an injury... Anyways, it seems to me whatever is happening to him (as far as we know it's nothing bad or dramatic), he's not dealing well as expected for someone at his level. I hope he overcomes this asap.

      Marcio TavaresMarcio TavaresIl y a 20 jours
    • @JohnLupo WTA master This is very true, in regards to many very talented players and people. They believe {because of their incredible talent} themselves to be above working hard or being humble. To some degree, it is true. Players like Krygios can win purely by talent compared to other players. However, it does not justify their bad attitude or behavior. People admire players like Shapo or Krygios for their talent, not their hard work or attitude.

  • Shapo´s technique is too wild. Its breaking his body. It doesn´t take much to change a feel and thus confidence. To onlookers it just looks like he is missing for no reason. Thiem is the same - he looked done in and gave up against Diego and his other losses. Effortless technique is the key not only to longevity but consistency a la Fed. A bull like Rafa can pull it off to a certain extent but imagine if he had no long injury periods...

    • Interesting comment about his technique. Something is definitely amiss. He was doing so well at US Open and a few other tourneys, then just started tanking in the last 3 or 4 this season, first round exits. It has to be mental too, something lacking in his confidence. But the comment about technique is intrigueing. How do you think it's breaking his body?

  • there's something wrong with Shapavalov. At set point down, he hits mad like this. And as if lesson has not been learnt, at match point down, he hits a sicker and wider shot.

  • Shapo needs a restart, physically and emotionally. I hope he will have enough time in the off-season to recover from his shoulder problems and to regain confidence in his shots. He cannot win matches with such a huge number of errors. He was excellent in the late summer, but everything in his game fell apart during the indoor season. I still believe he can have a great 2021.

    • @J. M. Also RG likely just because it was right after US open he'd be really tired post grandslam hangover, so I'm interested in the AO

    • @J. M. Hm we will see this year, thought us open was his breakthrough. Guess you have a point didn't realize his results are like that. Maybe its cause he plays such a high pace ball striking style like shapovalov its really good when you're on but very hard to maintain

Eye of HorusEye of HorusIl y a 18 jours
    • @Eye of Horus He has been extremely inconsistent for his whole career. He was not a threat to win his last grand slam (Roland Garros), plus his 2019 grand slam results are 2nd round, final, 1st round, 1st round, which basically copies his whole career (losing in his first or second match at many tournaments every year).

      J. M.J. M.Il y a 18 jours
    • @J. M. Uh Thiem has not been extremely inconsistent lately always a big threat to win every grand slam

Eye of HorusEye of HorusIl y a 18 jours
    • @King of Castles Yes, but that's fine if his "on" days are strong enough to win big titles. Wawrinka and Thiem have always been extremely inconsistent, losing in the early rounds for the majority of their careers, but their risky game is massive enough to win grand slams. I'm not sure Shapo's peak is that high, but it can still get better.

    • @Teragram Lawrence Gasquet is one of the most talented players to have not won a grand slam title, he was one of the youngest to win ATP title during his teens. At the age of 15, Gasquet became the second youngest player ever to play in Grand slam tournament.

  • So laugh when People Exalt tennis player like Shapovalov, Auger Aliassime , Tiafoe,Khachanov. These are all good players but with weak mental strengh so they can lose wifh everyone(even is a final slam) in their mind that can support the rallies or stay focused on the game so they will leave it. This lose is classic for them. Well if i was in Shapovalov i would ask why i'm so stupid to lose against Simon, Rodionov and Albot in a row

      Patricio JesusPatricio JesusIl y a 20 jours
    • @Timur Romanov It's the best year of his career so far. The indoor season (except for Paris and London which he did/will probably not play anyway) is not that significant. The four losses in a row is just a bad couple of weeks, nothing else than that. He always has plenty of early exits every year, that's his nature.

      J. M.J. M.Il y a 20 jours

    • @Timur Romanov But also his career-high ATP ranking, his first grand slam quarterfinal, fourth Masters semifinal… You should not judge his season by this late-season indoor slump (which was also influenced by his shoulder injury). Most importantly, he was playing the best tennis of his life this summer.

    Jeremy YuJeremy YuIl y a 20 jours
    • @Tyler Byrne I had Pospisil as the favorite in this match so I wasn't surprised he won. Pospisil is in good form and the courts are quite slow. When Struff failed to end the point fast he turned into an error machine. Pospisil played smart.
