  • Back when courts were fast, this would suit Roger Federer more so than Novak and Rafa. Heck, Roger would've gotten way more titles than today's "slow" tennis. Now everybody wanna be a bunch of pussies and slow down the court and this favors heavily for Rafa....

  • Superb match. Pistol Pete remains the best player I've ever seen, but forgotten how good Becker was. This is how tennis shd be played on a fast court, imo - serve and volley, and attacking. This match had that, but also wonderful passing shots and half volleys. Also great not to have endless ball bouncing before the serve, grunting, and (pre Covid) constant towelling off between points.

  • If we returned to single handed backhands, you would get this type of playing style again. All court tennis. But with the prevalence of DHBs, this style won't return. We can only admire it via old matches. It's definitely a treat to watch!

    Alan ChongAlan ChongIl y a 17 jours
    • @Alan Chong that’s just not true at all! The surface speed is the main reason, besides there were plenty of double handlers back then and it made no difference at all...

      ben grayben grayIl y a 5 jours
    • @ben gray I disagree. For me, it's all about the type of backhand a player uses. The DHB player can hit passing shots all day long with two hands on the racket. It's made net players extinct.

      Alan ChongAlan ChongIl y a 5 jours
    • It’s nothing to do with backhands, it’s to do with surface speeds

  • One of the greatest matches ever played, and every bit the equal of anything played today. This is the match that shows those who say Sampras and Becker were just one-dimensional servers/serve-and-volleyers don't know what they're talking about. This is what tennis could and should be: fast, attacking and spectacular - so much variety in their all-court games, and such a contrast to the baseline grinding of today. This is also the match that those deluded fools who have seen little or no tennis before this era, yet who loudly and insistently proclaim this era to be the best in tennis history, should be forced to watch, in full, to show them the error of their ways.

    marty davmarty davIl y a 19 jours
    • I agree with everything here. This Tennis is amazing to watch and far more better than current grinding one. Also the thing that this era is best just because it has players with more slams is just ridiculous and disrespectful to past legends. Tennis fans have deteriorated with time making such claims.

      Zeljko CrljenicaZeljko CrljenicaIl y a 18 jours
    • What exactly is one dimensional about the rallies shown in this video ? The players are running back & forth, left & right, approaching the net, etc. in rallies. Even though this might not be everyone's favourite type of Tennis - fast paced & shorter rallies, but you really can't say with a straight face that today's left-right-left-right ball bashing 4000+ RPM tennis has more variety than this... It is honestly refreshing for me to see a match which seems to be more based on hitting winners, than forcing an error out of your opponent after a 10+ shot rally with an 6000+ RPM groundstroke which happens today in every match.

The point arrived were the power was too much for a speedy surface, so they started to slow down the courts to see again more precision in the location of shots, a case in point is all the lines that used to hit Djokovic to defeat Nadal.
