  • It's nice to see 'new players" emerge/fullfill parts of their potential against 'better players'. As if its hard enough to 'break' the big three, let alone top 10, i reckon that the established younger player such as zverev, tsitsipas, khachanov, rublev, shapovalov etc, will find it harder in the future with likes of davidovich fokina, alcaraz, ruud, humbert, seyboth wild, only getting better.

  • I hope Marton Fucsovics can have some good results, I think he needs them very much for his self-esteem. He's a good player, but seems to me not very confident in his possibilities; a good result and few steps ahead in the rankings might increase his confidence. I hope he can break at least the top 30, in the end.

  • Khachanov playing like trash these days smh for such a talented player

    pi314159pipipipi314159pipipiIl y a mois
    • @RedennaH 14 Cameron is correct here. His grip is major con, especially the way he plays with it. Kygrios and Roddick also used full westerns but are much more aggressive with their shotmaking and could flatten it out more on faster surfaces. Full westerns are notoriously difficult if you get the timing off as the heavy topspin pulls the ball short allowing your opponent to push up on baseline and dictate play. Khachanov seems to be struggling these days compared to when he started off. Initially he was a bit of gunslinger and would rip his forehand more, thus pushing his opponent deep and creating winners.

David RiegerDavid RiegerIl y a mois
    • @RedennaH 14 he doesn’t move well enough on clay to ever be a threat to win a masters title or the French open. If you look at the way Khachanov hits his forehand now, sure he gets a lot of spin, but the depth and pace aren’t enough to win him many points on any surface. His backhand is slightly above average. In 2018, when he had his best results, his first serve was a much more effective shot than it had been in 2020. I only look at the cons because they are whats relevant here. No player with a forehand grip like that has ever won a major or even made it to the final of one as far as I’m aware.

Cameron EarlsCameron EarlsIl y a mois
    • @Cameron Earls you only look at the cons. The pros are that he can have more speed and spin on his forehands. Sure it would be even more effective on clay as it will help him hot more winners on this defensive court and at the same time he will have enough time to prepare for his shots and on hard courts, if he takes the time to prepare early he can hit some incredible inside out forehands

      RedennaH 14RedennaH 14Il y a mois
    • @RedennaH 14 Khachanov's forehand holds him back on faster courts. It's a fact. His wind-up takes too much time and he can never hit the ball early. Same ugly grip that Tiafoe has.

    • Indeed, I think Nadal makes a bad example in that regard, since he is so popular many young players look up to him and I can understand why, he is possibly the GOAT but as much as I love him you really can't deny that his reactions are sometimes too much and he's been doing it forever literally, he screams like wild animal after each point even though the opponent made a double fault or made terrible unforced errors he still fist pumps like a maniac and screams and jumps, it's really hard not notice these things

But apart from these exceptions (and the Big 3), I have to agree that tennis has become monotonous.

    • @Trevor Miller Its not that they dont amount to anything, but sometimes winning a big tournament doesnt equal consistency. For example Rublev has won muiltiple tournaments, he will probs do well in either Paris or Tour finals.

James OsullivanJames OsullivanIl y a mois
    • @Cameron Earls What I have been saying for a while now. It's not just his takeback, but also he uses a full western grip which doesn't give him any court penetration. It's a grip only useful on clay to generate heavy topspin. 95%+ of pros use semi western grip and the remaining usually use a modified eastern (Eg Federer, Del Potro and Rublev) to hit flat and hard. Eastern's can still generate topspin but are great at crunching winners. Khachanov will continue to struggle with that forehand. He needs to do a Roddick/Kygrios (both use/used Westerns) and learn to flatten it out more.

David RiegerDavid RiegerIl y a mois
    • Top players get to the end of the season tired or even injured. Roger, Rafa, Novak. That's why Khachanov won in 2018 and that's why whoever wins the ATP Finals doesn't amount to anything the last few years.

Trevor MillerTrevor MillerIl y a mois
    • @James Osullivan Even if true, he did well in 2018, think he won 3 or 4 titles that year, and he hasn't won one for a while now.

Aidan McGunnigalAidan McGunnigalIl y a mois
    • in my opinion the main thing holding Khachanov back is his forehand. The takeback on the shot is awkward and time-consuming. He's never going to succeed on fast courts with a forehand like that, and unfortunately @6'6 he doesn't move well enough on slower courts to be particularly great either

    • Yeah he used to beat top 10 players regularly and now he struggles in first round matches. Gotta work on his serve, for a 6'6" guy he really serves poorly honestly. Wish he'd get back in the top 8 at some point, last year and a half were pretty bad but he's not too old yet

    • @Oscar Agrell yes even khachanov is able to make himself inside top 20 from last 2 or 3 years but jack sock is...... dont know whether he is in top 200 or not😄

  • Davidovich Fokina will be top 30 by the end of next year... really solid player, great groundstrokes, decent serve and he's improved his game amazingly this season. Pipping him for a big 2021
